Still Life Paitings

Flowers/Chicken 2014 references traditional still life images of flowers and meat. Flowers are associated with beauty (of the fleeting kind), love, sex, vanity, as well as springtime. Images of dead fowl suggest the manly pursuit of hunting on large estates as well as everyone's pursuit of eating. In this case, store bought, mass produced chicken forms the vase for the flowers, in an unhealthy mix of subject matter.

Windhandel 2015. The title is a Dutch phrase that translates to "trade in wind". The phrase has a connection to commodity speculation, such as futures contracts, and often associated with "Tulip mania". In the case of this painting, there are also associations to Dutch still life painting, the commodification of painting, and speculative art collecting.
